Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity

Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder that has a negative effect on one’s ability to stay on task and/or inhibit certain behaviors (response inhibition). Other symptoms include difficulties in listening to instructions, organizing school work, fidgeting, talking excessively, leaving projects, chores, and homework assignments unfinished, and paying adequate attention to details. ADHD symptoms have a negative impact on school, work, relationships, and finances.

There are three types of ADHD, and the individual is diagnosed based on which symptoms present most strongly.

  1. Predominantly Inattentive Type– Key symptoms are lack of organization, procrastination, inability to sustain concentration or focus on details, or difficulty following verbal communications, such as instructions or conversations.
  2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type– Symptoms include fidgeting, talkativeness, or impulsivity.
  3. Combined Type– A combination of the two types of symptoms are equally present.

At Sacks Clinical Consulting, we offer both diagnostic assessments for ADHD. Research demonstrates that while medication is an important component of treatment, therapy is key to creating lasting changes.
